Pedro as usual took some GREAT photo's it's late & I'm trying to do them in some kind of order to post. I'll figure out how to get them all up in time. Anyway anyone that didn't make it you missed a really great time. I figured out one thing it wasn't just about this one little high school class. It was more about as you get older you tend to be in situations with large groups of people you don't know or have anything in common with. Reunions are interesting because your in a room full of people you've known all your life & some that you haven't seen in 37 years.It was more about as time rolls on, this little town (which is what this blog was all about) & it's current & former inhabitants are disappearing along with the little town & its good to know some of the spirit still lives on.

PS: I know your probably going let me put my boots on & try and wade outta this its getting a little deep, er' where's my shovel........

Some people don't remember it there was a guy that worked there that I'm told wore a basket for a hat. Don't ask me I've heard this from a couple people I don't remember him but the story is true I've heard it a couple of times from very reliable sources. It's now a bar called Hansome Harry's.

I posted this because I liked the picture. Anyone remember the girls vs. boy’s soccer match at the junior high? I wasn’t there but was told Emily kicked the winning goal against the boy’s team. It was a sad day for the boy’s team if someone other than Ziems would have been the goalie we might have won. I guess John more so than anyone had to bear the brunt of the loss more than anyone else! :):):)

These photo's are Charlie Brady's & thats Doc Brady (Charlie's Dad) on the riding lawnmower. The interesting part of the photos are how stark & nothing Seagate was in 1960. The pines in the backround (on the 1st two photos) are the beach & I remember 10 years later in 1970 riding my dirtbike there & it not looking much different than this, I remember most of Naples being treeless. When I moved back in 1996 all the trees had grown & created shade & it looked totally different than it did back then. I thought it was my imagination how bleak Naples looked in the 60's but photo's like these confirm it wasn't my imagination. Hurricane Donna hit less than 6 months after these photo's were taken & that house is still standing today. Charlie added there was 3 feet of water in the house & the Brady's sat on a closet shelf while Donna blew through. Funny part he also said the Lincoln in the carport bobbed around in the water scrapping up against the house & bumping up against the carport posts.

I think this is the first one of yours that I have missed. we had already made plans to be in Alaska on a cruise. We are leaving on August 6 and return on August 18. Does This Picture Need An Explanation?

Boat Haven what an institution! Probably one of early Naples biggest employers (besides Publix). Living in Brookside I walked or drove by this place everyday as far back as I can remember. On weekend nights on the way home I would use the light from the Mercury Outboard Motors sign as a reference light to cross the highway to Davis Blvd. On Saturday nights this came in real handy being the beer I drank was having it’s usual after effects. In early 60’s Naples this was one of the biggest buildings I can recall kinda like a Naples Empire State Building to me. I only talked to Phil a couple of times toward the end his life & never got to thank him for the beer & the sign light he supplied for my weekend walks home.

Thanks Mr. Morse for all you did for Naples & for your daughter for telling me to get a life when I need to be told to. Also anyone remember the Hawaiian Pearl/Golden Orchid the pink & purple Edsel with that shark fin trunk lid? Yep we NEED a photo of that here, what a little missing piece of 60's & 70's Naples!

What can I say Johnny Frye & his never ending jokes, he lived in Coconut Circle & would walk to Brookside & then we would walk into town. Our 1st stop usually would be Brookside Bowl & Billiards we would do an hour or so at the Bowl's pinball machine & then hop over to the billiards & buy 2 cigarettes for a nickel. Then the walk or hitchhike into town & listen to Johnny's jokes all the way to the Beach Store. I still remember one of them & can't re tell it here but it still makes me laugh out of 50 or so jokes he'd usually have 5 good ones. But they were all funny mostly because of his delivery & the laugh that went with them. I miss those jokes & that laugh these days.........

I had a REAL GOOD story to go with this post but there's too many names involved & that's getting WAY TOO COMPLICATED! So this is probably the only documentation that Halloween in Naples was just a whole lot of FUN! Except for this dumbass that didn't run fast enough........

Not only 6 months probation but also a week in county jail for not getting his hair cut (which he did) part of the conditions of probation. So throwing eggs not getting your haircut & a court appearance for your haircut got him one step away from Okeechobee reform school. I guess it's like they say big time "CRIME DOESN'T PAY" ah, life's little lessons........

Remember those pictures where you had to smear that nuke lookin’, good smellin’ jelly on them? Between that and the mosquito spray, that chrome cool lookin’ mercury in flashlight batteries, layin’ on the beach all day it’s a wonder anyone is alive……

High School Woods, Dirt Bikes & Officer Lurch

We used to have all night dirt bike camp outs in the high school woods. I think it would be fair to say our camp would be where what now be the right hand east bound lane of the Golden Gate Parkway, somewhere close to where TGI Fridays stands today.

This night it was Marty S, John Z, Jeff B & Larry F, Sid S & I, plus Joey G who showed up later in his VW Bug. We would set up camp & have a real good time until around midnight when someone would come up with, we’re bored let’s go spin donuts on the baseball diamond. So we all hop on our dirt bikes & commence to a donut convention on the baseball field. About half an hour into this I decided to take a break & rode over to the football field fence & just leaned on the fence & left my motor running. I’m watching everyone else spinning circles with orange dust billowing up in the headlights clouds of dust flying everywhere & everyone laughing like a pack hyenas.

Next thing I know I see car headlights come on in the middle of the field & I’m thinking wow someone else is gonna join the fun. Boom police car lights come & I about die! I throttle the hell outta there & everyone hits the main trail to the woods at the same time you wouldn’t even notice anyone next to you. We all haul ass midway thru the woods & ditch the bikes in an irrigation ditch & ran back to our camp. The whole time Larry F is missing Joey ran to his car & took off down the rail road tracks Sid kept going like we all should have. So like a dumbass I take my helmet with me back to our camp & toss it in the bushes. A while later we see flashlight’s & up pops Officer Lurch & he starts asking questions. BIG QUESTION: Do ya’ll boys have motorcycles? Answer: No sir we’re just camping, Lurch to Marty you’re gonna tell me your dad owns a whole shop of motorcycles & your not riding one? Answer: No Sir:):)! Lurch snoops around & finds my helmet in the bushes with my name inside it & we’re BUSTED then he says go get your motorcycles.

On the walk back to the police car that was parked on Fleishmann he’s going thru his whole Clint Eastwood spiel I can spot an ants ass at 100 yards & pick it off a fence post. That night it was a full moon & as we’re walking back & listening to him go on & on he walks right by our motorcycles all the chrome gleaming in the moonlight. He almost tripped over the damn things & never saw them. We caught up with Larry F the next day & Officer Lurch blocked the HS woods entrance & Larry slid into the police car & Lurch just picked him up by his shirt & pants & through him in the police car. Another funny part of the story was Jeff B, he would always go camping with us but would never have a motorcycle. But he always had this HUGE military duffle bag full of everything you could imagine. Rubber alligators, pots & pans, matches, candles. It was always hysterical but when he came along you KNEW there was gonna be some kind of action, Jeff was never a dull moment I miss him, what times those were just a bunch of kids having the time of their lives…..

I can still see Jeff on the back of Johns 250 Enduro with that duffle bag it hardly fit between them. And as usual Marty would be riding on his back wheel I doubt he ever replaced his front tire due to lack of wear.

PS: There were never no charges filed & we weren't arrested BUT we weren't doing anything against the law to begin with.

NO Teen Center post can go without a photo of CANDY CANE CITY! Everyone has a story about these 2 places they went hand in hand its like they were made to go together. Not to mention the small patch of woods at Saint Ann's the BEST place to stash your beer! We used to visit (not trespass) Boat Haven on Friday nights people would load their boats full of beer for the weekends. We would borrow the beer & usually return it along with dinner (Monty's 25 cent french fries) to Candy Cane City. I don't think the city ever paid for fertilizer there it must have been a mess come Monday morning. When I moved back I went to Boat Haven & apologized to Chrisse for my misdeeds she said oh, don't feel bad everybody did that. So anyway to any old time boaters thanks for the beer sorry if I ruined your weekend!

But I've always called it the Teen Center, where do I start here probably too many stories to cover. Best spot in the house was the west outside sliding glass doors to watch people cut the rug. There was one girl & I'm not naming names (I've caught WAY TOO MUCH grief for that already) that could dance without moving her head. It was the opposite of those bobble head dolls but her head & hair would never move I still can't quite figure that move musta wore out some mirrors perfecting that one. Then there's (occupant/resident) greaser story if you remember they (GREEZERS the "REAL" ones not us part timers) would gather down at the east end of the driveway toward the police station. They would congregate on that Norris Community Center concrete plaque/monument. There was a Coke machine at the Fire Department & it was the only place to get something to drink other than beer or water. So (occupant/resident) knowing better would walk all the way around the block to there just so he wouldn't have to walk by them so they could have a field day calling him a candyass & hold him upside down & shake him down for his money. We were tallking about how Marty was the ultimate in candyass/greaser double agent. His dad Mal owned the motorcycle shop so nobody dissed Marty or your repairs could drag on for months. Hands down the funniest early Naples head game...

Crayton Cove Without The Inn

Growing up here I always heard the name Kenny Shryver he developed the Cove Inn. But his name always popped up here & there since I've lived here. So I'd hear the name for like 35 years but never met or have seen this person kinda like hearing about Area 51 you knew it was there but no one knew anything about it. So anyway my family had a piece of land for sale in Bonita & one day I was up there putting in a for sale sign & up pulls this big Lexus. Out hops this man & starts asking questions about the property & introduces himself as Kenny Shryver. I shook his hand & started to laugh & told him I thought it was just a name everyone dropped to fit into a conversation I had no idea he was actually a real person. He got a real big laugh out of it & then I asked him about any Naples memorabilia & he said most of his was lost in hurricane Donna. Kenny died a few years back just another part of the story gone forever...

Probably this most interesting color photo of the old pier I've come across. Don Spicer told me the 1st year he moved here in 1958 his whole family went down to the pier on Christmas Day & went swimming. All of the old timer's on the pier stared at them like they were crazy because to them it was winter & only damn yankees swam this time of year. The next year the Spicer's went down to the pier on Christmas Day & stood on the pier & stared at all the damn yankees making like fools swimming in the wintertime. Nowadays all anyone bitches about is their driving..........

This one is a segway from the Banana Factory photo! God, can't you almost hear them playing there? It's Lowdermilk Park you can see all the way to that church on Mandarin Road & Orchid Drive up by 41! This picture is MAJOR ex-lax for your brain & one of the most stunning photo's I've come across.

PS: David Loach class of 1970 passed away this week he was a great guy. Cindy Bell threw a pool party once (she lived on South Golf Drive at the Beach Club Golf Course). Anyway I was always told NEVER mess with the golf course caretaker he packs a piece & he'll shoot you. So I'm at that party & David & I think Bruce Griffin decide I'm going in the pool & I'm saying adios amigos! Took off across the golf course at night & thinking well I might get shot full of holes but I'm not getting wet. Teenage logic never makes too much sense as you age does it? Urban Legends, do you remember that old Naples Motel between the Beach Store & the Pier everyone would go I'll give you a dollar to run through the hallway of that old building. I'm still a dollar poorer for that one....

Probably one of my favorite local gigs of all time. They played under the pavilion at Lowdermilk Park probably sometime in the late 1960’s. It was the 1^st time I realized the beach could be used for something other than skin cancer. The only one I really remember was Vince Wood (oh crap, what a liar I am the girl singer was a MAJOR BABE!) mostly because you’d always see him somewhere around town. It’s a little too late but thanks Vince you made growing up here pretty special.
